ABOUT US AND HOW WE STARTED HELPING WITH SMALL CLAIMS
LIEB & LIEB HISTORY
In 1972 Allan Lieb started practicing law in Hillcrest. In 1989, after various partnerships, Allan Lieb and his wife Peggy Lieb established Lieb & Lieb. Allan Lieb retired in 1996 and Peggy Lieb continued the partnership with their son Jack Lieb. In 2001 Peggy Lieb retired and Richard Fahey joined Lieb & Lieb. Jack Lieb and Richard Fahey have continued the practice from 2001 to the present.
Since its inception in 1972, Lieb & Lieb and its predecessors have represented clients in general civil matters with an emphasis on real estate and business. Lieb & Lieb has been at its present location since 1983. Our general civil practice has expanded to include, transactional and litigation matters in real estate, business, corporations, construction, contracts, family law, personal injury and now small claims.
EXPANDING TO SMALL CLAIMS
Through our practice in civil law, we’ve observed small claims court and noticed the same thing again and again. Litigants don’t understand how to prove their case. We’ve wanted to help but knew that attorney’s weren’t allowed in small claim court. We’ve written briefs for parties but never put more emphasis towards small claims matters. This year, small claims courts limits increased from $7500 to $10,000. With the increased limits, we found we can help litigants at a reasonable price.
One problem we’ve seen is that the litigants know they have been wronged, but they don’t know what they need to prove to win in court. Since we’re lawyers, we know that every case is brought under a law or “cause of action” and every cause of action has elements. We found that we can draft briefs which cite the law and explain the facts and we can help parties effectively present their case.
We also found that the procedure can be difficult for non lawyers. Parties need help completing the forms, naming parties properly, learning the time frames and serving the defendants. Parties became frustrated waiting in line to file documents. So we decided we would offer one service to handle the procedure and the law for our clients. With Lieb & Lieb, you meet in person with an attorney. We now handle all the procedure of completing the complaint, service, any research, and write a legal brief all for an affordable flat fee of $750, plus costs.
